With a hardness of 3 on the Mohs scale (1 the softest, 9 the hardest), Calcium Carbonate is a relatively soft rock. It is odorless, non-toxic, and in its natural form, its color ranges from off-white to pure white.

Calcium Carbonate history

CaCo3 has been used since ancient times, with one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World standing testament to its long history; the Great Pyramid of Giza. Constructed around 4600 years ago, the structure consists of 2.5 million blocks of limestone which largely remain intact to this day.

Structure of CaCo3

Throughout the next 4 millennia, CaCo3 and its derivatives (mainly quicklime and hydrated lime) were widely used. Still, their applications remained limited, mostly in mortar, putties, and as a building stone.

CaCo3 Applications

It was not until the 1900s that its special physical and chemical characteristics, particularly in its purest form, started to be better utilized, greatly expanding its range of applications. It has been used widely in the manufacturing of rubber, health drugs, paper production, production of nylons and a wide range of other infinite various number of applications.
